Frequently Asked Questions

Are parents involved in cub scouts?

Yes! Parents must remain at the meetings for Lion and Tiger scouts. Beyond that, it is not required, BUT, we love when parents continue to attend meetings and events. Most importantly, your presence shows your Scout that YOU think Scouting is important. Scouts who have involved parents tend to succeed the most in Scouting.

How do you ensure a safe program?

Cub Scouts has a very strict Youth Protection Training that every leader and volunteer must complete. A Scout should never be alone with a leader or volunteer without someone else present. In addition, each Scout must complete the parent’s guide to safe scouting (PDF) in order to earn their rank.

Does my scout need to attend all meetings?

No! We wish that every Scout could attend every den meeting, Pack meeting, and Pack event (Fall Hike, Blue & Gold, Pinewood Derby, Scouting for Food, etc), but we know that isn't always possible. Scouts should do their best to attend as many meetings as they can, and will need to finish any missed adventure requirements on their own time.

How often do cub scouts meet?

The pack (everyone) meeting is held at 6:30pm-7:30pm, every 4th Tuesday of the month. Den (small group by age) meetings meet at least once a month.

What is the difference between a pack and a den?

Every Cub Scout is a member of a Cub Scout Pack, which includes boys and girls from kindergarten through 5th grade. The Pack is divided into smaller groups called Dens that have about six to eight Cub Scouts of the same gender, all of the same grade level.

When can I sign up?

Cub Scouting is a year-round program. Join at any time! We welcome interested families to join us at any of our regular den or Pack meetings. There's no requirement to commit or sign-up before seeing how our program works and how much it has to offer.

What is required for the cub scout uniform?

The Scout Field Uniform (informally known as the "Class A") comes in many pieces. Items are available online from ScoutShop.org

For all Scouts except Lions, the uniform consists of

  • blue (Tiger, Wolf, Bear) or khaki (Webelos) shirt
TIP: To get as many years out of this as you can, buy this shirt as big as your child can comfortably and safely wear it.

  • Den rank neckerchief and slide

  • BSA "World Crest" emblem

  • Pack designation numbers (550)

  • Golden Empire Council emblem

  • Den designation number (ask your Den Leader)

  • Webelos Scouts will need their "colors" (a set of three tassels to be worn on the shoulder)

  • Cub Scout belt and buckle

  • Lions purchase a Lion t-shirt and optional hat.

Do not purchase any rank (Bobcat, Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos or Arrow of Light) emblems. Those must be earned by the Scouts.

Do I need to know how to camp?

We welcome the enthusiasm of those that already know the value of the Great Outdoors. We also understand that some of you may have never touched a tent or walked a dirt path into the woods. Our volunteers are eager to answer your questions, give you advice and put any fears or concerns to rest.

Where is the scout shop?

The address is 251 Commerce Circle, Sacramento, CA 95815

Are cub scouts the same as boy scouts?

Cub Scouting is part of the Boy Scouts of America program—so in that sense, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are both members of the same organization. However, they are entirely different programs: Cub Scouting is a family-oriented program designed specifically to address the needs of younger youth.
